Children and Families in Temporary Accommodation

This section of the procedures outlines issues that warrant specific consideration to ensure that the needs of children in temporary accommodation are addressed.

1. Overview

1.1 Any placement in temporary accommodation can be stressful to children and families. Any professional who becomes aware of a child living in temporary accommodation must make every effort to ensure that the child is registered with a GP, is in receipt of all other appropriate health services and in the case of a school aged child is attending a school.

1.2 Where there is concern that a child is either not in receipt of social, health and education services as necessary to promote their health and development, the child should be considered, in the first instance, to be a child with additional needs.

1.3 Where there is concern that a child who is in temporary accommodation is in need, or in need of protection the appropriate referral should be made.
